As we enter the Advent season, our hearts are drawn to the familiar sights and sounds of Christmas: lights sparkling in the darkness, the warmth of gathered families, and the melodies of cherished carols. But this year, we will tune our ears to the songs found in the Gospel of Luke, sung not by choirs or congregations but by the people and angels surrounding the birth of Christ. These songs, the canticles of Luke 1–2, proclaim the glory of God and the fulfillment of His promises through the coming of Jesus.
In this four-part series, The Songs of Christmas, we will explore the biblical hymns that rise from the hearts of God's people in response to His work. These are not just ancient poems; they are rich, Christ-centered declarations of God's redemptive plan. Each song calls us to lift our eyes from ourselves and focus on the Savior, the fulfillment of God's covenant promises. From a reformed perspective, we will see how these canticles exalt the sovereignty, mercy, and grace of God in Christ.
Mary's song is a declaration of joy in the faithfulness of God. She magnifies the Lord, recognizing His mercy and strength in fulfilling His promises to Israel. Her song calls us to humble faith, acknowledging God's sovereign work in salvation history as He brings the Savior into the world.
Zechariah's prophetic song arises from his astonishment at God's faithfulness. Once silenced in unbelief, he now praises God for the dawn of salvation in the coming Messiah. Through this song, we will celebrate Christ as the fulfillment of God’s covenant with Abraham and the source of eternal redemption.
The heavenly host breaks into history with a song of glory, announcing the good news of peace through Christ. This song reminds us of God's purpose to reconcile sinners to Himself through the incarnation of His Son. Together, we will marvel at the humility of the Savior's birth and the glory it brings to God.
Simeon's song celebrates the fulfillment of God's promise that salvation would come through His Christ. Holding the infant Jesus, Simeon declares Him the light for the Gentiles and the glory of Israel. This closing message of the series will fix our hope on Christ as the culmination of God's redemptive work and the assurance of our eternal peace.
Each of these songs invites us to join in the chorus of redemption, worshiping the One who is the centerpiece of history and the Savior of our souls. Let us journey together through The Songs of Christmas, beholding Christ in His glory and rejoicing in the salvation He has brought.
